What is an employee time clock or system?

An employee Time clock, Time Recorder, Bundy Clock or Time and Attendance System can be a form of a time card machine or a punch clock that is a mechanical, electronic, digital or biometric clock. These time systems are used for tracking employee time and attendance, job costing, or security by clocking on and off by either using a Time Card, QR Code, Proximity Card, Pin Code, Palm Reader, Fingerprint, or Facial recognition.

How do I Introduce a Time Clock to my Employees?

It’s a good idea to explain to your employees why you have decided to purchase a time clock or update your current one. Your staff may see a purchase of a time clock or an upgrade to biometric time and attendance system as an enemy. You should point out that a time and attendance records are the employees claim to be paid correct wages including any overtime due or penalties associated with that time.

It is also advisable to discuss what you regard as acceptable for late clocking in such as accident on the freeway. If the staff try hard to be on time but are docked they may feel disheartened. If upgrading to Biometric time clocks explain to your staff that this is just a more affection way to collect employees hours worked. Explain that a fingerprint time and attendance system uses a fingerprint to create a code on the machine that tracks when staff clock in or out. That the time clock does not create a full fingerprint that could ever be used by 3rd parties to replicate or duplicate human fingerprints.

What is the difference between Non-Calculating & Calculating Bundy Clocks?

Non-Calculating Time Clocks will stamp the date and time on a time card and rely on employee to adding up time cards which have times stamped onto them using a time recorder such as the Bundy Clock. The time recorder has been in use for many years and may still be bought new today.

​Calculating Time Clocks also have times stamped onto them but the payroll staff labour costs are not has high as the time clock calculates the total time.

What is Buddy Punching?

In the recent years problems started to rise in the workplace with the original style Bundy clocks. If an employee for example was running late for his shift, another employee ‘buddy’ could take their time card and clock on for them. Therefore, Bundy-style time clocks are still excellent for few employees where trust and honesty exists, however most business and certainly large employers are making the move to systems like a biometric time clock which cuts out opportunities for another employee ‘buddy’ to clock on or off for them. What is a Biometric System or Automated System?

Automated time and attendance systems can use proximity cards, pin code, HID cards, and biometrics(fingerprint, or facial). The employee swipe, touch or stand in front of the time clock to identify themselves and record their working hours as they enter or leave the work area. The time and attendance system information is then transferred to a computer for processing, in some cases a portable memory device is needed and an employee has to physically transfer data from the time clock to the computer.

The software once on the computer generates employee timesheets which are used to calculate employee wages, some software can integrated into the company’s payroll software.
